Police are investigating the serious assault of a 12-year-old girl at a Dundee park – after a video emerged of the “horrendous” attack.
The incident, which involved another girl, took place at Mid Craigie Park on Pitairlie Road on Friday.
The 32-second clip was reportedly uploaded to Snapchat at the weekend, and has also been shared among parents and children.
In the video, the victim is forced to the ground by another girl, who then gets on top of her and lands several punches on her head.
Girl dragged along ground by hair
The girl is then dragged across the ground a number of times by her hair while being repeatedly punched in the face and kicked.
The youngster can be seen trying to shield her face throughout, while onlookers are heard laughing.
The girl’s mum, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has confirmed to The Courier that her injuries include a suspected broken nose.
Parents in shock at daughter’s injuries
She said: “My daughter was totally broken in the aftermath of this. She is getting stronger now but when I saw the extent of her injuries it was disturbing.
“Her dad picked her up from a house near to the park where it happened and took her to hospital.
“When he saw her for the first time, he was shocked at how badly injured she was.
“They went to Ninewells Hospital on Friday evening and got x-rays. Due to the extent of the swelling staff at Ninewells said it looks like she has a suspected broken nose.
“The police were here on Saturday evening taking a statement. They said this was the worst assault they had seen on a child after watching the video.
“Forensics came back out on Sunday morning and took pictures of her injuries.
“As parents we haven’t been able to watch the video but we have shown her school what she was subjected to.
“At this stage she doesn’t want to go back to school and let anyone see her like this given the extent of her injuries.”
Girl ‘humiliated by horrendous attack’
Another parent who was sent the clip said: “It was horrendous to watch – you can clearly see she is not fighting back.
“Children are always going to fight but this went beyond that, she was seriously attacked.
“Not only has she been badly injured, these other kids have humiliated her by filming it.”
Police investigating serious assault
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We received report of a 12-year-old girl having been seriously assaulted by another girl at Mid Craigie Park in Dundee on Friday.
“Inquiries into the incident are ongoing.”
The incident has been reported to the school that both youngsters attend.
A Dundee City Council spokesman said: “It would not be appropriate to comment on an ongoing police matter.”
