In the early morning hours of November 9, 2016 in New York City, Donald Trump took to the podium and made a victory speech after defeating Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.
In a shocking outcome, the celebrity businessman and political novice was declared the 45th president of the United States.
Although it has since been revealed that Clinton looks set to win the popular vote (a 47.6 percent lead compared to her opponent’s 47.5 percent), Trump won out on seats, meaning that the Republican party stands to retain its grip on the senate.
Trump’s victory has set off multiple protests across California and several other US states.
