Motorists are having to negotiate long detours on the main artery into Dunfermline from the east.
Fife Council is carrying out three weeks of work to resurface the carriageway and install upgraded traffic signals at one of the busiest junctions on Halbeath Road, the road into the town centre from the M90.
Stretches of road around the Halbeath Drive and Whitefield Road junction and the Halbeath Road and Linburn Road junction are closed meaning motorists face lengthy diversions.
To the north, they will head around Kingseat Road, Townhill Road and Appin Crescent while to the south there are two diversions, via roads in the eastern expansion at Duloch and around Garvock Bank and Woodmill Road.
Work started on Monday, a Fife holiday, and will last up to three weeks.
Temporary traffic lights will be in operation in Halbeath Road as the carriageway is resurfaced and traffic lights upgraded.
These will be controlled by hand to help keep traffic moving.
The works between Whitefield Road – the main access road to Queen Margaret Hospital and entrance to Queen Margaret rail halt – and Halbeath retail park will be carried out between 9am and 9pm every day.
There will be road closures at the Halbeath Drive and Linburn Road junctions and Whitefield Road will be closed to southbound traffic, with motorists only having northbound access.
Fife Council acknowledged it expected delays on Halbeath Road and asked road users to plan alternative routes where possible.
Some bus stops will be closed, with passengers diverted to the next available stop and asked to check with Stagecoach for more information.
Access for emergency services will be maintained.
Fife Council apologised for inconvenience caused by the “essential works” and said it will try to minimise disruption.
The council will also be resurfacing a main road in Methil from next Monday.
Work, expected to take up to two weeks, will be carried out in phases from the Methil Brae end and will finish at Whyterose Terrace.
Bus stops will be closed but access for emergency services will be maintained.
