Nearly half of SNP councillors in Dundee have second jobs working for the party’s MSPs and MPs in the city.

The updated register of interests for councillors show that six of Dundee’s 14 SNP councillors are employed in some capacity by another elected SNP politician.

Many councillors across the country also work in some capacity for more

Half of them, including administration leader John Alexander, are on the payroll of Dundee West MP Chris Law.

Lochee councillor Roisin Smith is employed as another councillor and Coldside councillor Anne Rendall is his press officer.

Dundee East MP Stewart Hosie employs Lochee councillor Alan Ross as a caseworker.

North east councillor Willie Sawers works as a senior researcher for both Mr Hosie and Dundee East MSP Shona Robison.

Mr Hosie and Ms Robison also employ Ferry councillor Kevin Cordell as a constituency assistant.

Ms Robison also employs Fife councillor Julie Ford.

Other councillors also have second jobs, including several Labour members, both Liberal Democrat councillors and senior Conservative councillor Derek Scott, who works for the Department of Work and Pensions.

Lochee Labour councillor Michael Marra works for Dundee University while his fellow Labour Lochee councillor Charlie Malone is a lecturer at Abertay University.

SNP north east councillor Will Dawson works for Scottish and Southern Energy while Coldside SNP member Mark Flynn is an engineer for the company JEOL.

Labour Coldside member George McIrvine works for the Scottish Police Authority but is currently on secondment to UNISON Scotland.

Conservative West Councillor Donald Hay is a receptionist at Ninewells Hospital while the ward’s Lib Dem member Fraser Macpherson is a manager at the Institute of Revenues, Ratings and Valuations.

Deputy Lord Provost Bill Campbell is paid by Glasgow firm Saltire Printing.

Liberal Democrat Ferry councillor Craig Duncan runs his own business, Duncan’s Dogs.

Labour group leader Kevin Keenan is a manager for ATMRC and a COSLA spokesman.

James Price, campaign manager at the TaxPayers’ Alliance said: “Taxpayers will be wary of anyone seen to be ‘double dipping’ in two public sector roles, especially if they are doing very similar work.

“Voters expect an efficient and lean public sector with no return to the hordes of non-jobs that used to be prevalent.”

The details, found in the register of members interests, was updated in July.

A SNP source said that due to the part-time nature of the work, it is common for councillors to also work for members of parliament.
