A beast found guilty of trying to drug and sexually assault a lodger at his Dundee home has been branded a menace to women.
Andrew Brown was convicted of raping a sleeping female and drugging two others to sexually assault them following a trial at the High Court in Livingston.
Brown slipped sedatives into hot drinks he served to two of his unwitting victims before attacking them, a jury was told.
After a jury found him guilty of two rapes and one sexual assault, it emerged that he had previously served a six-year prison sentence for sexual crimes.
Judge Lord Armstrong added Brown’s name to the sex offenders’ register with immediate effect and called for criminal social work background reports and a full risk assessment.
Because of the danger he is believed to present to women, Brown faces a lengthy extended sentence with a punishment part of years behind bars followed by close supervision in the community on release.
Brown, 56, a prisoner at Edinburgh, had denied carrying out the three sex attacks at addresses in Dundee and Edinburgh between March 2012 and October 2016 and had lodged special defences claiming that two of his victims had consented to sex.
During his trial one of the women gave evidence that she felt unwell and disorientated after drinking a cup of coffee Brown gave her shortly before he pushed her onto a bed and raped her twice.
She told the jury: “I told him no, no, no! I said no three times to him. I was crying. I was in pain.
“I told him he’d raped me. He thought it was OK to rape me. That’s not how a relationship should be.”
She said she went for a shower after her ordeal. “I felt horrible, ugly filthy,” she added.
A female lodger at his then home in Dundee told how she found “curdy stuff” in a cup of tea Brown made her before he put his hand under her bra groped her breasts and tried to put his hand down her trousers.
She said: “I could see something in the sugar. I don’t know what it was to this day but it wasn’t food.
“There was a crystalline sort of stuff. I picked some up on the end of my pinkie and tasted it. It was a sickly sort of taste.
“It was some form of drug or drugs. The intentions after he done that weren’t honourable.
“It wasn’t the first time he tried to do that.”
A third woman gave evidence that she was drinking whisky with the accused when she began to feel “really tired” and fell asleep on the sofa.
She wakened to find Brown raping her repeatedly. The woman, who became distressed while giving evidence, described herself as being in severe shock.
In the immediate aftermath, the jury heard she told a friend: “That bast**d raped me seven times!” Asked who ‘that bast**d’ was, she said: ‘Andy’.”
She told the court she was crying and had difficulty walking and didn’t want to walk to police station to report the incident.
Police witnesses described her as “absolutely hysterical” and said she was shouting and screaming that she’d been “raped by Andrew Brown”.
Brown will be sentenced at the High Court in Edinburgh on June 30.
