A teenager who armed himself with a knuckle duster and a screwdriver to accompany his friend to a pre-arranged “square go” in a supermarket car park has been detained for a year.
Paul Smith went with his pal as a “second” to the Sainsbury’s car park in Dundee’s Tom Johnstone Road after tensions between the friend and 18-year-old Craig Wilkie erupted to the point where they arranged a fight to settle their differences.
Smith, who has previous convictions for assaults using weapons including a machete, went along and immediately confronted Mr Wilkie, showing him the knuckle duster he had brought with him.
A sheriff told the 19-year-old father-of-two: “You have two previous convictions for assault with the use of a weapon.”
Depute fiscal Charmaine Gilmartin told Dundee Sheriff Court that Smith then pulled out a screwdriver from his waistband and “lunged” at Mr Wilkie, striking him on the body.
She said: “A small wound was left on his chest. It was a two centimetre abrasion with no penetration.
“The accused left the scene following the incident and police were contacted.”
Smith, a detainee at HMP YOI Polmont, pled guilty on indictment to assaulting Craig Wilkie by striking him with a screwdriver to his injury on September 28 last year. He further admitted being in possession of a knuckleduster on the same date.
Sheriff Alastair Carmichael sentenced Smith to one year’s detention.
He said: “Your problem is that you have two previous convictions at sheriff and jury level for assault with the use of a weapon.”
