A Dundee man has appeared in court charged in connection with a robbery at a Broughty Ferry shop.

Nathan Ritchie, 38, appeared in private from custody at Dundee Sheriff Court on Wednesday afternoon charged with assault and robbery following an incident at the William Hill bookmakers in Broughty Ferry.

Ritchie, of Dundee, made no plea to the charges brought against him after being detained by police on Tuesday morning.

The case was committed for further examination.

Ritchie was granted bail and will return to Dundee Sheriff Court in the coming weeks.

A large number of uniformed officers attended the scene of the alleged crime on Brook Street shortly after 11.30am on Monday morning.

Stunned locals said a police operation had not been witnessed in the town’s busiest shopping precinct in more than two decades.

Plain clothed Criminal Investigation Detectives were spotted in the high street in the aftermath of the alleged event, speaking to shoppers who seemed almost oblivious to what had just occurred.

A spokesperson for William Hill said it would be inappropriate to comment on a live investigation, but added: “Any employee involved in an alleged incident like this will always be offered counselling and be given support if they ask for it.”
