A young Polish woman arrested when pepper spray was found in her handbag claimed she was unaware it is illegal in Scotland.
Izabela Rzepka, 21, admitted possession of the prohibited weapon when a routine security check was conducted at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court on February 18.
She claimed she ordered it online to carry with her as she walked her dog.
Sheriff Grant McCulloch called for reports before Rzepka, of Lawson Street, Kirkcaldy, is sentenced on July 25.
He said: “It’s a serious matter with up to a 10-year sentence.
“I’m surprised to hear you ordered this on the internet for delivery to the UK.”
