A drink-driver caught almost five times the alcohol limit has been fined and banned.

Charlie McGuinness, of Kirkton Crescent, was found “intoxicated” behind the wheel after crashing his car near the A90 Kingsway West in the early hours of December 2 last year.

A sheriff told the 24-year-old that he was lucky to have escaped without causing “significant damage”.

Dundee Sheriff Court heard that McGuinness previously pled guilty to having 105 mics of alcohol in 100mls of breath, exceeding the limit of 22 mics.

Depute fiscal Lynne Mannion said the alarm was raised after McGuinness failed to negotiate a roundabout at the flyover on Coupar Angus Road near the A90 Kingsway West.

She said: “It was just after 2am and witnesses saw the accused fail to negotiate the roundabout and collide with railings.

“He was spoken to by people there and they could see that he was intoxicated.

“Police were called and the reading was given as stated in the charge.”

Social work reports were previously called for due to the high reading McGuinness – who has no previous convictions – provided during his breath test.

Sheriff John Rafferty said: “This was an extremely high reading.”

McGuinness was fined £1,100 and banned from driving for 21 months.

He was ordered to resit his driving test once his ban ends.
