Only one person has tested positive for coronavirus across the whole of Tayside and Fife in the past 24 hours.

It comes as new figures from the Scottish Government show there have been no deaths registered in Scotland as a result of Covid-19 in two days.

The total number of people who have died in the country after testing positive for the disease since the beginning of the pandemic is 2415 -a figure that has been unchanged since Saturday.

In Tayside, the number of people who have tested positive for Covid-19 has risen by one since Sunday – from 1676 to 1677. Seven people remain in the region’s hospitals battling the virus.

In Fife the total number of confirmed Covid-19 cases remains at 879. However the number of people in the kingdom’s hospitals with coronavirus has risen from 54 to 56.

Coronavirus: Cautious optimism as Scotland records first day of zero registered Covid-19 deaths in 11 weeks

Across Scotland as a whole of the number of people who have tested positive for coronavirus has risen from 15,621 to 15,639 – an increase of 18.

Speaking at a press briefing in Edinburgh on Monday afternoon, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said that the second day in a row without any registered deaths was “very encouraging”.

She added: “I can’t tell you how long I have waited to be able to report such a development and I know all of you will have longed to hear that.”

However, she said it was likely that more deaths from the virus were likely to be reported in the coming days.

Sunday marked Scotland’s first day of no new Covid-19 deaths since March.

Speaking on the day, Ms Sturgeon warned Scots not to “read too much into a single day’s figures”, but nevertheless said it was a moment “we’ve all longed to see”.
