When Steve Bruce’s name started “trending” on social media, I automatically assumed he had decided to stand as another unity candidate in the Labour leadership contest.
It turns out he’s in talks to become the England football team manager, which is about the only position in the country suffering a greater leadership vacuum than the official opposition at this moment in time.
We are a step closer to bringing this sorry contest to an end, however.
Angela Eagle soared only briefly, dropping out of the race to replace Jeremy Corbyn last night and pledging her support to Owen Smith.
It will now be a two horse race between a couple of white, straight, male, left of centre politicians.
Not one for diversity champions but Smith, despite his tasteless comments that he is “normal” because he is married and has children, showed more get up and go in his campaign launch.
He had actual policies for one thing.
But does he have enough about him to see off Corbyn?
It is an incredibly tough ask and, no matter who wins, this will not be over.
