Dundee United boss Csaba says Safranko is ‘not Messi or Maradona but perfect for Scottish football’

Talks are continuing between Dundee United and Danish Super League outfit AaB over what is likely to be a season-long loan for Slovakian striker Pavol Safranko.

The 23-year-old international has already trained with the Tangerines this week and he remains on course for a debut at Queen of the South this weekend.

Tangerines boss Csaba Laszlo has confirmed Safranko’s presence at the club’s St Andrew’s training base and is now waiting for the green light to use him at the weekend.

And if, or when, he can, Csaba is sure a player he knows very well will be a hit in the Championship.

It was Safranko’s form when Csaba signed him for Dunajska Streda in the Slovak Superleague that earned him a move to Denmark for a six-figure fee.

“He is a Slovakian international, he played for the U/21s and I know him from before,” he said.

“I signed him for my former club so I know him well. He is strong in the air and a powerful player.

“He is one of the best players in the air I have worked with.

“He’s not Messi or Maradona but he’s a very hard worker and as a box player is excellent. I think he is perfect for Scottish football.

“When I signed him before he was very good for me and he got his move to Aalborg on the back of that.

“He has trained with us now but he is still a player at Aalborg so it is in the hands of the two clubs.”

Safranko made 28 appearances for AaB last season but has dropped to the bench for the early games of this term after a formation change.

That’s prompted him to seek a regular starting place elsewhere in a bid to add to his two Slovakia caps and he sees teaming up with his old boss again as the perfect way to achieve that.

Although United have not ruled out a move for Austrian attacker Toni Vastic after his trial last week, with Safranko not coming cheap, that now looks unlikely.

Csaba, meanwhile, has apologised to fans for his team’s poor showing in Saturday’s defeat against Dunfermline.

He’s made it clear the display that led to three second half goals being conceded at Tannadice was unacceptable.

“I have to apologise to the fans, for all the people who like and love Dundee United, for the performance and the result on Saturday.

“The second half was nowhere near good enough, it wasn’t acceptable,” he added.

“It was not what the fans, the staff and even the players wanted.

“The players told me, gaffer we have to go and really tell everybody sorry but I take the responsibility.

“Of course, we know every team can lose games but we know we should not lose like we did in the match.”
