Dundee United’s Harry Lewis insists side cannot afford many more slip-ups

Dundee United goalie Harry Lewis admits that if the club want to secure automatic promotion this season, then they cannot afford many more slip-ups similar to the one that cost them dear at Brechin on Saturday.

The table-topping Tangerines made the short trip north to the Glebe as red-hot favourites against the rock bottom Angus outfit.

Csaba Laszlo’s team had won their last three league games against Dumbarton, St Mirren and Falkirk while Darren Dods’ part-timers have yet to taste victory in the league this season.

United duly bossed the first half but only had a Scott McDonald goal to show for their dominance.

Brechin then equalised shortly after the break with Lewis having to pull off a vital save right at the death following skipper Tam Scobbie’s 91st minute sending off to ensure his side at least took a share of the spoils.

When asked if these are the sort of games United need to win if they hope to be crowned champions, the on-loan Southampton keeper said: “Absolutely. That’s why Brechin are in this league. It is always a mental test. You come in and the changing-room is tight, the pitch isn’t great and it is a freezing cold afternoon.

“But these are the games where you have to be picking up three points especially when you are on top for large spells. So we see it as two points dropped.

“We really need to be winning almost every week so where we are aiming to be, it is a very disappointing result.

“It is easy to play at home to St Mirren, Inverness, the big teams in this league but these are the sort of places where you need to come and pick up results.

“So we need to have a look at ourselves, what went wrong in the game and rectify it sooner rather than later.”

Brechin goal hero Crighton insists that the club’s long wait for their first league win of the season will soon be over.

The former Livingston defender said: “There is no pressure on us. We all just want to see if we can play in this league.

“I think we have proved that we can. You want to play at the highest level you can and we are doing that.

“I think we are holding our own. We are trying to get that win and we are not far away.”
