St Johnstone midfielder Murray Davidson is ready to pledge his long-term future to the Perth club.

Manager Tommy Wright sees Davidson as a key member of his squad.

And he’s opened talks to extend the contract of the 28-year-old midfielder who arrived at McDiarmid from Livingston seven years ago with skipper Dave Mackay in a £50,000 bargain deal,

Speaking yesterday at the Tesco Bank Football Challenge which saw 350 primary school kids put through their paces in Perth, Davidson revealed: “We are in discussions about a contract extension.

“I still have another year but myself and the club are keen to get something sorted out. The sooner it can get done the better.

“I am settled off the park with a family now in Perth and I enjoy coming into my work.

“That is important to me. I am one of those people that needs to be content and I have no regrets about the time I have spent here.”

Davidson is hoping to get the all-clear from a niggling hamstring injury to face top four rivals Motherwell on Saturday.

But he has half an eye on next season and welcomed the addition of former Dundee United defender Keith Watson from St Mirren.

Davidson said: “I was surprised when he had to leave United because I was always impressed with Keith when we played them.

“He has had a very good season at St Mirren so the injury problems he had at Tannadice are obviously behind him.

“Keith is adaptable and that is important here. He will be a good addition to the squad. He won’t regret this decision. This is a great dressing room with a group of hard-working boys.

“He will be keen to get back playing top flight football.

“Like a lot of the guys the gaffer goes for Keith has something to prove. They have maybe taken a dunt and are looking to prove themselves. They have a hunger to succeed.

“But they also see what the club is all about and what the gaffer wants for us. And they feel wanted here.

“I know the gaffer is looking to strengthen so it is good to get bodies in early, with Michael Coulson already signed-up from York City.

“The league is going to be even stronger next season so we have to be ready for that.”
