Montrose boss Stewart Petrie wary of threat posed by bottom-of-the-table Cowdenbeath

Montrose boss Stewart Petrie insists tonight’s game against bottom-of-the-table Cowdenbeath is in no shape or form a “banana skin”.

The Gable Endies know that if they can take at least a point from the encounter at Central Park, they will leapfrog Peterhead to the top of League 2 with just three games of the campaign remaining.

The Angus side have won their last two matches – beating Edinburgh City 3-0 and then thumping Stirling Albion 5-0 on Saturday.

They start as firm favourites against Gary Bollan’s Blue Brazil but Petrie is adamant the Fifers are deserving of the highest respect despite their lowly position and cannot be treated lightly.

The Links Park boss said: “It was vitally important not to lose two on the spin after the Clyde result so the boys have bounced back well.

“They have done it against two really good teams.

“Stirling is a very hard place to go to so to win 5-0 was fantastic.

“We scored some great goals that were worthy of winning any game.

“It was also pleasing to pick up two clean sheets in a row with the defence bolstered by the return from injury of Matty Allan and Michael Bolochoweckyj.

“I also have to mention our fantastic travelling support at Stirling.

“To have a couple of hundred Montrose fans backing the team made such a difference to the players.”

Petrie added: “Now though all our attention turns to another tricky game at Cowdenbeath.

“As far as I am concerned this game is in no way a banana skin for us.

“That’s because Cowdenbeath are as good as anyone in the league.

“Gary has them on a great run and they are going really well.

“So we are under no illusions how tough the game will be. They are scrapping for their league survival which is not a nice place to be as Montrose know from just three years ago.

“However, we will go with the intent to try to win the game and see what happens.

“As I have said before, it is where you are at after 36 games so we will just concentrate on a difficult game at Central Park and then take it from there.”
