Fife cafe set up during pandemic announces closure due to ‘unforeseen circumstances’

A family-run Fife tearoom set up during the Covid-19 pandemic has closed suddenly.

The Harvest Mouse tearoom was set up by Kate Gill, her mum Tracy and brother Liam in December 2020 within Fife Folk Museum.

It was nominated for Best Cafe 2022 by Scotland’s Business Awards in the Fife retail category.

However, a post on its social media confirmed the business has closed due to “unforeseen circumstances”.

‘I think we smashed it’

The accompanying social media post said: “Thank you so much to everyone that was involved in our wee tearoom.

“From our wonderful suppliers and fabulous customers, to our awesome wee team and of course our amazing friends and family.

“It’s been tough but we made it over every bump in the road (and there was quite a few of them)!

“I may be totally biased but I think we smashed it.

“We achieved so much more than I ever dreamed we would, it’s been an experience I’ll never forget.”

Customers have passed on their best wishes on social media.

One said: “Definitely smashed it, loved visiting, a wee bit of peace and pleasure, every time.

“Good luck – enjoy your exciting next chapter, rest whilst you can.”

Another added: “Loved visiting and the tough decisions over the cakes.

“You have all done great and wish you all the very best”

‘We wish the next tenants all the best’

Another social media post last month said: “As most of you are now aware mum and I have taken the decision to close Harvest Mouse Tearoom.

“Our last day will be Sunday July 24.

“Fife Folk Museum have been looking for someone to take our place.

“We will not be affiliated with the new owners in any way as the Harvest Mouse business (the business name, our wonderful staff and our hard earned reputation) will be leaving with us.

“It is only the tearoom space that is up for rent.

“We wish the next tenants all the best in their new venture, whoever they may be.”

However, the venue has closed three weeks before it had planned.

Ms Gill declined to speak to The Courier this afternoon.

A post on Fife Folk Museum’s website confirmed they were in the process of interviewing potential replacements to take on the lease.

It thanked Kate and her team and wished them well for the future.
