Abertay University in Dundee is exploring whether it can test students remotely because of coronavirus.
The university is testing whether students can sit their exams online.
First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said on Thursday there are no plans to close schools, colleges or universities.
But she added that if it did become necessary to close schools it may be for months, rather than weeks.
A spokesman for Abertay said no decisions have been taken on remote testing for students.
He said: “We are in the process of testing online software that can allow student assessments to be delivered remotely.
“This research is being undertaken as part of our preparedness should the coronavirus outbreak mean access to the campus has to be limited at any stage.
“We are continuing to closely monitor this evolving situation and following guidance from the relevant government agencies and public health bodies.
“All staff and students are being kept up to date on the latest travel, health and hygiene advice and we will continue to communicate with both the Abertay community and our local partners as the situation develops.”
