Broadchurch actress Jodie Whittaker has been unveiled as the 13th version of the Doctor in the popular BBC sci-fi programme Doctor Who – the first woman to take on the role.
Ms Whittaker will take over in the role of the time-travelling adventurer from outgoing Scottish actor Peter Capaldi.
The Huddersfield born actress – who has had roles in films including One Day, St Trinian’s and cult sci-fi favourite Attack the Block – was revealed as the new Doctor during an advert broadcast after the Wimbledon men’s tennis final.
The 35-year-old said having the chance to take on the iconic role was “incredible”.
“I’m beyond excited to begin this epic journey – with Chris and with every Whovian on this planet,” she said.
“It feels completely overwhelming, as a feminist, as a woman, as an actor, as a human, as someone who wants to continually push themselves and challenge themselves and not be boxed in by what you can and can’t be.”
