After research revealed the most searched for cakes online from both the UK and Europe, we asked our audience whether they agree and here’s how they responded…

Last week, new research revealed chocolate cake as being the UK’s favourite type of cake, after it racked up a monthly average of 90,500 searches online during lockdown.

So we decided to put this to the test and find out whether our readers agreed with the results.

There was only 1.7% in it when it came to The Courier readers’ favourite, as cheesecake, with 22.4% of the vote, pipped chocolate cake to the post. The UK favourite had to settle for second place with 20.7% of the vote in our poll.

POLL: The UK’s favourite type of cake is revealed but do you agree?

Carrot cake came in third with 17.24%, which matches the survey’s theory that it is the third most commonly searched for cake on Google.

Interestingly, where the UK-wide research placed cupcakes as being the UK’s second-most searched-for type of cake on Google, our readers placed it in joint last, with a share of 1.72% of the vote.

In joint fourth place was Christmas cake and tiramisu, each racking up 6.9% of the vote. Tiramisu was identified in the original research as being Europe’s favourite cake, as it was the most searched for in three countries: Belgium, France and Italy.

Fifth place in our reader poll was the classic Victoria sponge, which took home 5.2% of the vote.

In joint sixth place there were no less than 12 cakes, each gaining 1.7% of the vote including some of the top choices from the original survey such as cupcakes, pavlova and panettone, as well as options written in by readers, such as banana cake, coffee walnut and Devil’s food cake.
