Several Angus workers have been saved from unemployment following the shock closure of a well-known local business.

Staff were made redundant after James Davidson and Sons Ltd, which is based in Montrose, went into voluntary liquidation.

The plumbing and heating firm, which was first established in 1834, called in administrators on February 19.

Restructuring partner Richard Bathgate of Johnston Carmichael was appointed as the provisional liquidator on February 19.

James Davidson and Sons’ website is inaccessible and an answer phone message on the company landline claims the office is closed.

The business was based on Montrose’s Orange Lane.

However Forfar firm Alliance Electrical has taken on six plumbers and engineers formerly employed by the firm after they were made redundant.

James Davidson and Sons had made contact with the neighbouring business in an attempt to save their workers from unemployment.

Contracting firm Alliance Electrical, which is part of the United Capital group, is also said be taking on a number of the Montrose firm’s customers.

Managing director of Alliance Electrical Errol Lawrie said: “It was a surprise to receive the call from James Davidson and Sons, a company which have operated for many years in the region.

Errol Lawrie of Alliance Electrical.

“Due to the continued success and growth of Alliance we have been able to save several jobs that would have otherwise disappeared locally, leaving very skilled tradesmen unemployed.”

“We have already been approached by a number of the company’s customers, whom we have reassured will continue to be served by the engineers with the support of our wider team.”

The Courier attempted to reach James Davidson and Sons’ management for comment.
