The woman who died in a Mearns cliff plunge has been named as businesswoman Lesley Pumford.

Mrs Pumford’s body was found by the Coastguard at the Kinneff coast, near Inverbervie, after a multi-agency search on Friday.

A man was also recovered, understood to be her husband Chris Pumford, who was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Police Scotland, the Scottish Ambulance Service, two teams of Coastguard, and Stonehaven RNLI were called out following initial reports that there was a missing person in the area.

Crews later discovered the 44-year-old had died on the cliffs.

The couple, originally from the Glasgow area, founded a dental surgery at Cults, Aberdeenshire, which was opened by Dame Anne Begg in 2011.

Mrs Pumford was its director and Mr Pumford, 44, its principal dentist.

The Dental Inspirations Practice website stated Mr Pumford enjoyed “long walks with his wife Lesley and their dog Ssal.”

The practice said: “Dental Inspirations can confirm that Dr Chris Pumford and his wife Lesley were involved in an accident on Friday 27th of May, as a result of which, Lesley passed away.

“Chris has sustained serious, but not life threatening injuries, and remains in hospital.”

Mrs Pumford was known for collecting in aid of the Rennie Maritz Fund, a cause set up to support the family of a sick Glasgow boy, and CLIC Sargent.

A police spokeswoman said: “Police Scotland can confirm the identity of the woman who was found dead in the Whistleberry Castle area of Kinneff on Friday May 27, 2016 as 44-year-old Lesley Pumford who was local to the area.

“Her death remains unexplained and enquiries into the circumstances are ongoing.”
