A young motorist who died after crashing into a wall was the fourth fatality on an Angus road in less than 10 years.
The 21-year-old — named today as 21-year-old Leanne McDonald from Montrose — was killed in the one-vehicle incident south of the River North Esk on Sunday night.
The crash, involving a grey Citroen C3, happened between Marykirk and Craigo around 9.40pm.
It is understood police are investigating the condition of the A937, which was described as wet due to rain in the early evening.
Police Scotland said no one else was in the vehicle and no other cars were involved.
Tributes were posted on social media.
Diane Allan posted: “So sad (it) happened beside my house. There was plenty of emergency services there who would have done all they could to try to save such a young life.”
Karen Taylor commented: “So sad. Another young life taken to soon. RIP my thoughts are with her family & friends.”
The single carriageway was closed for a number of hours following the crash, with police investigators scouring the scene.
The collision was the fourth fatal accident on the short A road in less than a decade.
In November 2013, a woman’s unborn baby died when two BMW 3 Series cars collided on the A937 near Marykirk.
The unnamed 27-year-old required an emergency procedure to deliver her baby but the boy, later named Bojidar, did not survive the trauma.
In 2010, a 21-year-old woman died when the car she was a passenger in hit a house beside the road.
Leanne Slesser from Fordoun died instantly when Megan Mitchell’s black Vauxhall Corsa crashed into Newton Cottages.
The 18-year-old driver, who was prosecuted by indictment over dangerous driving, was treated at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, but her passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.
In 2007, nine-year-old Jessica Lindsay from Montrose died when the car being driven by her mother was in collision with another vehicle at Craigo.
