Military bosses have denied claims marines in Arbroath have been left without hot water or heating since Christmas.
Around 80 members at RM Condor are believed to be affected by the problem. While the MOD says they have access to hot water and heating in other barracks, it is claimed the arrangement is unsuitable.
In a social media post one affected marine hit out saying they were “getting threaders” — marine slang for fed up — with the situation.
He wrote: “I’m based at RM Condor – 45CDO and currently living in a block with approximately 80 other lads that has had no hot water or heating since return from Xmas leave.
“Job was initially due to take three weeks max to replace and upgrade the boiler, however we are still without as apparently the contractor can’t get hold of the correct flute to finish the job and can’t tell the unit when they will get the part they need to complete the job.
“Lads getting threaders freezing … in cabins in the middle of winter as (bosses) haven’t provided heaters to every man in advance as they don’t have any.
“Lads having to flip flop it to the next block to use their facilities or go up to the gym.
“Transit block is falling to pieces and the top floor has already been condemned and placed out of bounds.
“Lads paying for accommodation that is unliveable and being fobbed off.”
Local councillor David Fairweather said the issue should have been resolved sooner.
“It’s shocking that they have been without heating or hot water,” he said. “If this was happening in the council housing stock then we would be held to account and the MOD should have taken it up as a matter of urgency and not left it for weeks.”
An MOD spokeswoman said: “At no point have personnel at RM Condor been without access to hot water or heating as alternative arrangements have been provided within the barracks. Work to repair the heating and hot water systems is due to be completed tomorrow.
“It’s vital that our personnel have high quality living and working accommodation. That’s why the MOD is investing over £4billion to create a better estate.”
