A public meeting is to be held after a promising future was secured for an Angus historical society.
Members of the Monifieth Local History Society recently secured a community asset transfer for the former Angus Council Access office and police station on the High Street.
It will be transformed into a new home for its House of Memories project which the group hopes will open in the spring.
Society president Margaret Copland now wants people to turn out in force on January 16 to have their say.
She said: “I wish to thank all those who over the past fourteen-and-a-half years supported our community project Monifieth House of Memories.
“Volunteer members of our organisation managed and financed the project, with support from the community and Angus Council, and were custodians of property for public display within Monifieth at their request.
“The project over the years flourished, and other varied services were provided by the volunteers free of charge, in particular our website, which encouraged people locally, nationally and internationally to visit.
“Varied circumstances caused the closure of the House of Memories to the public in late summer, however we were successful with our application for a community asset transfer of the former Access office and police station.
“The property has disabled facilities, parking and spacious accommodation to enhance the services our organisation provide.
“A planned Monifieth Community Heritage Centre could become a reality – we have the key, and have been offered the lease of a most suitable and appropriate building.
“Hundreds signed up offers of support, and we now need those individuals to make a commitment to assist in managing and financing the ambitious project.”
The Monifieth Local History Society was formed in September 2000 to research, record then share local history information through talks, events, exhibitions and displays.
Exhibitions in conjunction with other community events such as the Medieval Fayre, had been mounted in vacant shops, the Masonic Lodge and at the Angus Queen’s Jubilee celebrations within a marquee at Glamis Castle.
The meeting to discuss the latest development starts at 7pm on Wednesday January 16 for “questions, answers, discussion and recruitment of members and supporters”.
The community asset transfer for the lease of the building was previously agreed at a meeting of Angus Council’s policy and resources committee.
