A man has been seriously injured in a crash on one of the busiest roads in the Mearns.

The A90 Dundee to Aberdeen route has been shut both northbound and southbound at the Queenshill Roundabout, just north of Stonehaven, following the one-vehicle incident at about 2.20pm.

The silver Mercedes C Class is said to have rolled several times before coming to a stop.

The 48-year-old driver had to be rescued by firefighters.

He was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary (ARI) to be treated for his injuries, which have been described as serious.

Traffic Scotland has advised drivers to “use an alternative route” and warned of delays in the area.

Three fire and rescue appliances were called to the crash from Stonehaven, Altens and North Anderson Drive.

A fire and rescue spokeswoman said: “We got the call at 2.23pm. We had three appliances in attendance.

“We removed a person from a vehicle. We used hydraulic equipment, a rescue board and stabilisation equipment.

“The stop message came in at 3.02pm.”

Traffic Scotland added: “The A90 is closed in both directions at the Stonehaven roundabout due to a road traffic incident.

“Please use an alternative route where possible and allow extra time for your journey.
Road users should expect longer than normal journey times.”

The A90 has been closed southbound between Queenhill and Stonehaven, with no access available to the town from the A90-A92 junction at Netherley.

From the roundabout there is also no access on to the old A92 into Stonehaven, or on to the main A92 road. Traffic is being diverted northbound up the A90 towards Queenhill.

Traffic Scotland said at 8.15 the road was expected to remain closed for some time and traffic would continue to be diverted.

Police have appealed for witnesses.

Sergeant Colin Matheson, from the North East Road Policing Unit, said: “Enquiries into the circumstances of the collision are at an early stage and I am appealing to anyone who witnessed it or saw the silver Mercedes prior to the incident to contact us.

“I would appeal to anyone who may have stopped at the scene, and who has not yet passed their details to police, to contact us.

“I would also ask anyone who has any other information, including any dash cam footage from around this time, to contact Police Scotland on 101 using reference number 2050 of August 6.”
