A bakery delivery driver ploughed into a car on a residential Kirkcaldy street after falling asleep at the wheel.
Jaraek Borowski was taking a colleague home when he lost control of the Bayne’s vehicle.
The town’s sheriff court heard the other car, which was parked at the time, was written off in the collision.
The 38-year-old has now been banned from the roads.
Car hit pole
Fiscal depute Jill Currie said Borowski had been working overnight.
She said: “The accused was working as a delivery driver for a bakers.
“He had been working through the night and was tired.
“There was damage to (the other) car – it was written off as the front and back were smashed due to there being a post on the opposite side from the collision.”
When interviewed by police Borowski admitted drifting off at the wheel.
He told them: “I was driving along at 20 to 25 mph.
“I was heavy-eyed and fell asleep for a couple of seconds.
“I heard the passenger say ‘Jaraek’ but by then it was too late and I hit the black car.
“I didn’t have time to hit the brakes.”
‘He didn’t realise how tired he was’
Solicitor Keiran Clegg, defending, said the father-of-three had an unblemished driving record but had “underestimated” the effects of his tiredness.
He said: “He has worked as a delivery driver and held his licence for 20 years without incident.
“He has no penalty points (on his licence) and has never been disqualified.
“He had started the nightshift at 1.30am and had finished at 7am.
“He was taking a colleague home when the incident happened around 7.30am.
“He didn’t realise how tired he was.”
Borowski has since found work as a joiner, Mr Clegg said.
Borowski, of Arthurview Terrace, Danderhall, Midlothian, admitted driving dangerously on Dunearn Drive on June 10 last year.
Sheriff James Williamson disqualified him from driving for 12 months and fined him £300.
