The final round-up of the week of court news affecting Tayside and Fife.

Christopher Leaburn, of Hilltown Terrace, Dundee, admitted racially abusing a police officer.

Leaburn uttered racially offensive remarks toward PC Zanna Grigorjeva on July 23 2022.

Sentence was deferred for six months by Sheriff Gary Sutherland and Leaburn was told to keep out of trouble until then.

Battered bonnet with bumper

A Dundee mechanic pulled the bumper off his partner’s car and started battering its bonnet and roof with it. Andrew Gibb, 21, admitted the bizarre attack on the Ford Fiesta at the city’s sheriff court.

Early bird

An early bird from Angus has been jailed after breaching his court curfew to scour the streets at dawn in search of half-smoked cigarettes.

Craig Marshall was placed on a six-month restriction of liberty order in October, compelling him to stay in his home in Newton Crescent, Arbroath, from 7pm to 7am.

The sentence was imposed three months after the 39-year-old acted in a threatening manner at the Co-op supermarket in Arbroath’s Timmergreens and while en route to police HQ.

Another 14 days were added to the order in January when Marshall admitted breaching its conditions.

He appeared back at Forfar Sheriff Court by video link from HMP Perth and admitted another six breaches throughout February and March.

Solicitor Nick Markowski explained most had happened shortly before 7am when roll-up smoker Marshall had gone foraging for tobacco from discarded cigarette butts.

Sheriff Mark Thorley revoked the restriction of liberty order and jailed Marshall for eight weeks.

Marshall has previously taken court curfews more seriously, however.

In 2019, he abused a bus driver who refused to take him home in time for his curfew time because he had no money and was jailed for 75 days.

Drink-drive social worker

A drink-driving social worker was caught by police on a Fife road at nearly six times the legal limit with empty wine bottles in the footwell. Maureen Okolo, 42, pled guilty to driving her car on the B914 Saline to Kelty road after consuming excess alcohol (125mics/22) on March 7 this year.

19th century attitude to woman

An Arbroath man, once told he had a “19th century” attitude to women, went on an armed rant when his ex-partner came to collect property after they broke up.

Mark Simpson, 33, admitted acting in a threatening or abusive manner on December 4 at his home in Priory Crescent by shouting, swearing and making threats while holding a knife and to possessing the offensive weapon.

The 33-year-old told the woman to “f*** off” and refused her entry.

Forfar Sheriff Court heard this left the woman scared and Simpson then grabbed a knife and began making threats.

He phoned police himself and told officers the weapon had been to self-harm.

Simpson admitted the charges on the premise that they were not domestically aggravated.

Sheriff Mark Thorley placed Simpson under supervision for a year and told him to complete 200 hours of unpaid work in the next year, as a direct alternative to prison.

Six years ago, Simpson breached the peace by acting aggressively towards an ex-partner, grabbing her body and smashing a window at the same place and location.

He was sent on a domestic abuse programme and Sheriff Gregor Murray said: “It appears his attitude to women is rooted in the 19th century.”

Weapons cache

A Fife man who abused his ex-girlfriend for more than two years after their relationship ended has been jailed. Stewart Urquhart, 37, sent the woman a picture of a weapons arsenal including rifle, knuckleduster and sword, after they split up.

Drunken police attack

A drunk mum attacked two police officers on George Street, Montrose.

At Forfar Sheriff Court, Chloe McFarlane admitted assaulting the two constables on June 19 last year.

McFarlane, of North Street, Montrose, seized hold of one officer by his stab vest and pushed him, then repeatedly struck another officer.

The 31-year-old’s solicitor Billy Rennie said she “fully accepted her drunken behaviour.”

The court heard McFarlane has a previous conviction for offending towards police.

Sheriff Mark Thorley ordered reports ahead of sentencing on May 18.
