Dundee Mega Civilization event to settle fate of Europe

Dundee residents are being given the chance to decide Europe’s fate.

The city is due to host its first ever “mega board game” event next month.

The Mega Civilization event will see players compete to determine the course of European civilisation, from the stone age to the present day and beyond.

Unlike regular board games, the game feature a giant board and takes up to 12 hours to play properly.

A combination of role-playing and the famous combat game Risk, players must negotiate their society through the centuries by developing its culture, economy, science, politics and religion

Players can trade resources but must also endure – or trick other teams into accepting – natural disasters such as earthquakes, civil unrest or Boris Johnson.

Organiser Oz Mills said he hopes the non-profit event, which is taking place at Dundee West Church on August 13.

He said: “It is basically a massive board game. The board itself is as long as I am tall.

“You basically guide your civilisation as it spreads across Europe and Asia.

“At the end of each turn you get cards which are  resources  you can trade to develop.

“It takes about 12 hours to play and we need about 18 players. I’ve sold two thirds of the tickets already and once the 18 are sold, we’ll start selling more and put players into teams.”

Oz said megagames are popular because of their combination of strategy, role-playing, and socialising.

“There was an event in Aberdeen and me and some friends we to that and enjoyed ourselves and thought we can do this,” he said.

“All the money from the tickets will pay for the hall and refreshments for the day. Anything extra will go charity.”

A software designer by day, Oz is a keen board game player and has designed characters for role playing games created by American firm Green Ronin in his spare time.

He said he hopes Mega Civilization games will become a regular events in Dundee.

The game is an update of the 1980 board game Civilization, which also inspired a popular series of strategy games under the same name.

Megagames are an increasingly popular phenomenon. A Megagames Dundee group has already been set up and is organising its own event in October, using the Watch the Skies game.

This asks players to assume the roles of scientists, diplomats and politicians during an alien invasion of Earth.

The event will take place at The Friary on October 8.
