Lochee residents woke up to a “flood” on Sunday morning after firefighters battled all night to contain a fire that gutted a popular shop building.

The interior of the Furniture Factory on Lochee High Street, formerly Cherry Video and William Low’s supermarket, was engulfed by flames just after midnight.

One casualty was treated on the scene and their condition is currently unknown.

The second hand furniture shop suffered extensive damage to its upper storey after the blaze broke out in the roof space.

Water and debris were visible in front of the store, as well as damage to the signage.

Eyewitnesses said the surrounding residential properties were “soaked” to curb the spread of the fire.

John Grossie, owner of Lochee Launderette, said: “I thought there had been a flood at first, as there was lots of water outside the shop.”

Emergency services were on the scene until around 5am and returned later in the morning to continue investigations into the cause of the incident.

Lochee High Street was cordoned off for much of Sunday.

Police cordoned off the building and surrounding businesses in the middle part of the High Street for much of Sunday.

Shops on the lower and upper part of the street, on either side of the cordon, were open for business as usual.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was alerted at 12.12am on Sunday, March 3 to reports of a fire within a two storey commercial premises on High Street, Lochee.

“Operations control mobilised a total of six fire engines including an aerial appliance and firefighters worked to extinguish the flames.

“One casualty received treatment at the scene from the Scottish Ambulance Service.

“Crews left the scene after ensuring that the area was made safe.”
