Two people have been rescued from the River Tay near Dundee by RNLI lifeboats within an hour and a half of each other.

The lifeboat was first called to rescue a woman from near the Tay Road Bridge at around 5.15pm this evening.

Police were made aware of a person on the bridge at around 5pm and closed both lanes for around forty minutes.

The woman was taken to the shore and transported to Ninewells to be treated for a leg injury.

Just over an hour later, crews were back out from the Broughty Ferry base to rescue a man who was swimming from Dundee towards Fife.

Lifeboats managed to reach the man, also near the Tay Road Bridge, beyond halfway across the river after being called out at 6.26pm.

An RNLI spokesperson said: “The male was also taken ashore but did not need to be transported to hospital.

“He was in the care of the coastguard, police and paramedics who are checking him over.”

A police spokesperson added: “The man was around three quarters of the way across the river in what was a planned swim.

“He was on the western side of the Tay Road Bridge and we were made aware that he was in the water by a member of the public.

“The man was taken to the lifeboat station after swallowing a large amount of water and an ambulance had been requested.”
