A horse had to be put down at the roadside just off the Perth to Dundee A90 after it suffered a broken leg.

The incident happened on Thursday at around 5pm on the slip road leading from the road to Glencarse and the flyover to St Madoes.

Scottish Fire and Rescue said they sent two appliances and the heavy rescue unit from Perth after they were contacted by a vet.

The initial call said the animal was stuck in a horse box but it had been released prior to their arrival.

Local people spoke of seeing the horse lying at the side of the road and being tended to.

“It was a very sad sight,” said one man.

Screens were put up around the horse which was put down due to its injuries.

Another horse from the box had been led away from the scene while the incident was dealt with.

The fire service then assisted in the removal of the horse from the area.

“No other vehicles were involved,” said a spokesperson for Scottish Fire and Rescue.

Police Scotland said they got a call to attend at about 5pm to an incident where a horse had been injured.

“It had broken its leg,” confirmed a police spokesperson.

The scene was cleared by 7pm but in the initial stages the incident caused some disruption to traffic.

Vehicles were backed up down the slip road towards the A90 and cars and buses were brought to a near standstill as they had to circumnavigate the horse box on their way into the village of Glencarse.
