Two people were injured when a group of “mindless” teenagers threw bricks and bottles on to a motorway.

The youths damaged four vehicles travelling on the M73 in North Lanarkshire, and a 54-year-old man and 53-year-old-woman sustained injuries.

They were taken to Monklands Hospital in Airdrie for treatment and have since been released.

Police are searching for the four teenagers involved and warned their motorway verge stunt was potentially deadly.

The incident happened at the slip road overlooking the southbound carriageway at junction two at Bargeddie, at around 8.10pm on Saturday.

The teenagers threw bricks and glass bottles at cars coming off the slip road on the Bargeddie side of the motorway.

The suspects are all male and thought to be aged between 14 and 17. One was wearing a dark top with a yellow hood and another has red hair and was wearing jogging bottoms.

The third suspect was wearing a white top with a large logo on the chest and the fourth was wearing a top and jogging bottoms, which were both grey.

Detective Sergeant Alan MacDonald said: “This type of behaviour is extremely dangerous and could have resulted in a fatality due to the mindless action of those responsible.

“It would have still been daylight around the time of the incident and I would appeal to any drivers or members of the public who saw what happened to get in touch.

“Anyone with information can contact officers on 101.”
