Abroath boss Dick Campbell looking for big response from players

Arbroath boss Dick Campbell is looking for his players to bounce back strongly after what he described as a “horrendous” result in midweek.

The Red Lichties were unceremoniously dumped out of the Scottish Cup on Tuesday night after being thumped 5-0 at Clyde.

Barry Ferguson’s side were awarded two contentious penalties in the match and while irked by the spot-kicks, Campbell would not allow that to deflect from his team’s overall failings.

It was Arbroath’s second defeat in a row following last Saturday’s loss to Edinburgh City and the veteran boss is expecting a big response when he returns to his former stomping ground at Station Park today.

He said: “I have been in the game for a long, long time but Tuesday night was a horrendous result.

“We can talk about the two penalties they got but the fact is we didn’t apply ourselves.

“That has been the case in the last two games but we are definitely much better than we showed against Edinburgh City and Clyde.

“To be fair, even when we were 3-0 adrift, I felt we could have got a draw but it wasn’t to be.

“It shows how far we have come, though, that we expect to beat a big team like Clyde through there.

“The good thing is we now have an Angus derby against Forfar to get us back on track.

“I made two changes for the Clyde game and I will be making another couple for Saturday.

“We have to remember that we beat Forfar 2-0 and Clyde 4-0 fairly recently but we haven’t turned up in the last two games.

“However, the players must realise that if we beat Forfar, we close the gap on them to four points but if we lose it widens to 11 so there is loads at stake.

“It will be my first trip back to Forfar but my time there is history and all I am concentrating on now is Arbroath.”

Campbell has a full squad to choose from with no injury or suspension worries.
