Dundee United loanee Logan Chalmers is walking on Ayr after being given an opportunity of first team football with The Honest Men.
The 22-year-old hoped to have been given a chance at his parent club over the summer but, with two managerial changes, he found himself on the fringes.
That saw the promising winger sent out for a season long-loan with Lee Bullen’s Championship surprise package.
It’s his third spell away from Tannadice following a short Covid-hit stint at Arbroath, before a successful half season with Inverness last time round.
At the beginning of this season, he experienced some European football, albeit as an unused substitute, in the Tangerines’ Europa qualifier against AZ Alkmaar.
‘Not going to sit and do nothing’ at United
He is now back in the second-tier and looks to have picked up where he left off.
Chalmers has already netted once and assisted three goals in his six games for Ayr United – a better start than his time at Caley.
After his loan at Somerset Park comes to an end next May, the Dundonian will have another year left on his current deal with United.
When that time comes, he hopes to have done enough to prove his worth to the Tangerines bosses – or other potential suitors.
“The most important thing is just coming to Ayr and doing the best I can do,” he told Courier Sport. “Anything else is out of my hands.
“All I can do is play my game. Whether United want me to go back and play? That’s the end goal.
“I want to play for Dundee United and at the highest level possibly can but it’s down to me to do what I do.
“I don’t want to be sitting on the bench.
“If I have to come down a level to show that, that’s what I’ll do.
“I’m not going to sit around at United and do nothing. I want to get out and show people, not just at United, what I can do.”
Ayr hopes
Chalmers has racked up 40 appearances for United and even featured 12 times under Micky Mellon in the Premiership.
He knows what it takes to play in the top flight. And he’s determined to help Ayr in their unlikely promotion bid.
“The boys, manager, everything that’s happened while being there I’ve enjoyed and we’ve had some big wins,” Chalmers said.
“I enjoyed my time at Inverness too but it’s a completely different manager and style of play but I’m a winger.
“The main thing for a winger is getting goals, assists and getting at people.
“I’ve managed to do that a few times but I’m working on getting more and keeping Ayr at the top of the table.
“It’s a crazy league but if we focus on ourselves, hopefully we can go far.”
