Nobody guaranteed a game at St Johnstone, says Tommy Wright

Tommy Wright.
Tommy Wright.

Tommy Wright has sent out the message that here is no such thing as an automatic pick in the current St Johnstone team.

Summer signings like Paul Paton, Blair Alston and Michael Coulson, and established regulars of years gone by such as Alan Mannus, Chris Millar and David Wotherspoon have all spent time on the bench when fully fit so far this season.

Midfield is arguably the part of Wright’s Perth squad with the deepest strength in depth.

But all across the pitch the Northern Irishman believes he has achieved his pre-season goal of making sure the pressure is on his players to get a game.

Reputation and/or former glories will not get you into his starting XI.

Wright said: “With the number of midfielders we have it has taken a while for me to find the balance I want in there.

“Liam Craig has forced his way in at the moment and is looking really good alongside Murray Davidson in there.

“The challenge is now there for the other ones to force their way back in.

“That is what I wanted from the squad this season, I didn’t want anyone thinking they were a shoo-in to play.

“I don’t want anyone believing they are an automatic pick for the team, there has to be serious competition.

“To drive us on you can’t have people thinking their position is safe and the players have responded really well to that.

“Competition for places is crucial and the lads have known what it’s going to be like from day one.

“If you drop out for any reason, there’s someone waiting to take your place and that’s good for the team.”

Wright added: “Alan (Mannus) is probably the most unlucky one of the lot because he started the season well but missed a game because he took ill.

“Zander (Clark) came in that week and did really well, so he’s continued in the team.

“It’s clear that’s the way it’s going to be in every position and the players understand that.”
