From furlough to fresh start – Perth man builds new property firm

The pandemic was the catalyst for Perth estate agent Gary Robertson to set up his own firm.

Two years on, he has expanded to have a team of four at the venture he named Possible.

Perth-born Gary has been in estate agency for 17 years, but was furloughed during the pandemic.

“Like a lot of people, it gave me a lot of time to consider where I was going in my life and my career,” he recalls.

“Sometimes it’s not until you slow down and look back that you realise how far you have come. That can give you a bit of confidence in yourself that you often don’t fully embrace.

“I then did some research and got my figures together.

Perth estate agent Gary Robertson set up Possible after being furloughed during Covid.

“Once I’d set down that path of starting my own business, I knew there wasn’t anything going to stop me.

“My family and friends all thought I should have done it years ago.”

Highlights for Perth estate agents

The director said his parents helped out financially to get the estate agent off the ground, and he also used his own savings.

He said there have been many highlights so far in the short life of Possible, which is now selling 15 to 20 properties a month.

“The first phone call we received, the first ‘for sale’ board I put up and the first money received into the business bank account all stand out.

“These seem like little things, but I think it’s important to celebrate the small stuff too.”

The firm donates £25 from each property sold to local primary schools. This scheme has generated more than £8,000.

Gary added: “I just love hearing from the teachers and the schools as to how this is being used and helping the kids.

“When I was asked back to my old primary school in Tulloch to get a personal thank you from some of the kids, it was a memorable moment for me.”

Plans for expansion

Looking to the future, Gary wants to expand Possible into different locations outwith Perth.

“By the end of year five, I hope to have three branches running.

“I don’t have any grand plans to be the biggest estate agency in the country – and it’s not for me to say we are the best.

“I want myself and the team to be the best they can be and do their best for our clients.

“If we get that right, then who knows where it will take us?”
