Two women have been injured, one seriously, in a crash on the busiest road between Dundee and Aberdeen.

The A90 was closed northbound between Keithock and Luthermuir due to the one-vehicle incident involving a red Citroen at Balmakewan.

Two women were rushed to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary following the collision, which took place at about 12.50pm.

The northbound section of the road was closed for more than three-and-a-half hours due to the incident.

Police at the scene of the incident.

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We received a call at 12.48pm to attend a road traffic incident on the A90 south of Laurencekirk.

“We dispatched two ambulances to the scene and two patients were transported to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.”

Police said one of the women had suffered serious injuries.

Speaking shortly after the collision, a spokeswoman for the force said: “The A90 Northbound has been closed following a one vehicle collision two miles south of Laurencekirk.

“Southbound traffic is currently unaffected. Diversions are being put in place for northbound traffic.”

A fire and rescue appliance was also sent to the scene from Stonehaven.

A spokesman for the service said: “We received the call at 12.55pm. We mobilised one appliance. Crews made the scene safe and had small tools in use. The stop message came back at 1.55pm.”

The Citroen was left wrecked following the crash, with its wheels damaged and the front windscreen smashed.

Debris was strewn across the carriageway with luggage, including a suitcase and a backpack, seen by the side of the road.

Large queues of traffic queued back on the northbound A90 following the collision.

A major diversion, more than 17 miles long in total, was put in place through Angus into Aberdeenshire for motorists travelling north.

It took drivers off the A90 along the B966 to Brechin, Trinity Road, Southesk Street, the A935, the A92 and the A937.

A Traffic Scotland statement read: “(The) A90 Northbound is closed at due to a road traffic accident. Motorists are advised to use alternative route and expect longer than normal journey times.”

The road was cleared at about 4.30pm.
