Cub scout leaders in Kirriemuir have come up with a creative way to keep youngsters busy and active during lockdown.
Leaders from the Monday night 2nd Kirriemuir Scout Group, are challenging cubs to climb the height of Ben Nevis – a total of 8,736 steps – using stairs at home.
One cub, 10-year-old Sophie Mallinson has already completed the challenge. Dad Craig Mallinson said it took her just nine days to complete the climb. “I’m going to have to replace the carpet,” he joked.
“The first day she started was April 4 and she completed it on the morning of the 13th.”
Using a spreadsheet to keep track of her efforts, Sophie managed a minimum of 30 climbs each day.
Craig said: “Her legs were a bit like jelly. She enjoyed it. I did Ben Nevis when I was younger, so I’m quite chuffed that this has come along.”
Craig added they may take on the Ben Nevis in real life, once lockdown has been lifted.
He also praised scout leaders for the idea, adding: “They are really lucky with the leaders down there.”
To commemorate the climb the cubs are asked to create a flag that they can place at the ‘summit’.
And to celebrate Sophie’s success, Craig took some photographs of Sophie in her climbing gear, and edited them to show her at the top of Ben Nevis.
