One of the most prestigious Highland Games in the Tayside calendar was blessed by glorious sunshine on Sunday.

The Cortachy Highland Games and Flower Show took place in the grounds of the eponymous castle near Kirriemuir, former home of games chieftain the Earl of Airlie and now his son Lord Ogilvy.

A full programme of heavy, dancing and piping events drew crowds alongside children’s entertainment, a duck race down the River South Esk, and a fancy dress competition.

Games secretary Jane McEwen said an estimated 1,300 people attended and competitors had come from as far afield as Canada and Australia.

A rejuvenated companion dog show with around 70 entrants was hosted by Elaine Butterworth.

David Ogilvy, the 13th Earl of Airlie, said: “The Games have long been part of the life of Cortachy and have always welcomed new and old faces from home and abroad.

“I’d like to thank the committee and numerous volunteers who put in many hours every year to ensure the success of the games.”

The dancing event winners were as follows: Kildrummy Cup for 9-11 years – Shannon McArtney, Forfar; Lucy Duncan Cup for 12-15 years – Ciaro Roger, Kirriemuir; Charlie Mill Trophy for 16 years and over – Laura Boyle, Kincardine.
