A Tayside man has been handed a driving ban over a junction smash on the A90 that hospitalised another driver.

Ross Wilkie turned on to the dual carriageway at the Murroes junction and into the path of Donald Allan’s BMW on August 10 this year.

Mr Allan broke his arm and Wilkie, from Dundee, had to be cut free from his Vauxhall Zafira.

The 26-year-old appeared for sentence at Forfar Sheriff Court, which heard he had nine penalty points on his licence at the time, although six points had since lapsed.

Mr Allan was driving southbound approaching the junction and the accused was travelling west on the C6 unclassified road at 5.15pm.

The accused drove into the path of Mr Allan, who was unable to stop.

His vehicle collided with witness Allan’s and came to rest on the northbound carriageway, facing south, narrowly missing witness Gibb who was driving north on the A90 in a works van.

Depute fiscal Kirsten Letford said: “Both vehicles were extremely damaged and the accused had to be cut free from his vehicle by Scottish Fire and Rescue.

“The accused was treated for minor cuts and bruises and was then cautioned and charged by officers.

“Witness Allan had to have metal plates inserted into his arm to help treat a break.

“I have a memo confirming his injuries.”

Defending Wilkie, solicitor Michael Boyd said: “He was working with Alan Davies as an HGV mechanic at the time.

“He was going to visit a friend in Tealing.

“His current employers have indicated that he needs his licence to continue his occupation.

“He does recognise there will be a disqualification of some sort.

“I’d ask your lordship to impose a disqualification on a shorter term than the six months under totting up, given his personal circumstances.”

Sheriff Murray imposed a four-month ban and a £500 fine.

Wilkie, of Granton Terrace, admitted careless driving which led to a collision, damage to both vehicles and injury to himself and Mr Allan.

At a previous appearance, Wilkie said he was making the same journey every day at that time and “couldn’t explain” what had happened.
