Dog lovers have reacted with distress to an accident in which a family pet was killed on near Dundee on Sunday.
The black Spaniel was on the road near Auchterhouse when it was struck by a vehicle in the evening darkness and sadly did not survive.
Although it was reportedly not wearing a collar, a Facebook appeal led to the owner being traced.
The Missing Pets Angus and Dundee posting said the driver of the vehicle had been devastated to realise the dog had died.
Police and SSPCA were informed and the posting was widely shared.
“Such a sad accident and has affected so many,” said the Facebook posting.
Dozens of people left comments expressing their shock and sadness.
