Major police presence as officers cordon off Arbroath street following ‘serious assault’

An Angus street has been cordoned off following reports of a stabbing.

Police were called to Sidney Street in Arbroath at about 11.45am after a man was found with leg injuries following a “serious assault”.

He has been taken to hospital and the road has been closed at both ends as police investigate the incident.

Locals have claimed the man was stabbed during the incident.

His injuries are described as serious but are not said to be life-threatening.

Police say they will remain on the street “for some time” as they investigate the incident, and have appealed for any witnesses to come forward.

A police spokeswoman said: “Police Scotland is appealing for information about an incident that took place about 11.45am today (January 23) in Sidney Street, Arbroath.

“A man has been taken to hospital with a leg injury sustained in an alleged serious assault. His injury has been assessed as serious but non-life threatening.

“Officers are following a positive line of inquiry regarding the incident, however would still like to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time who may have information that could assist the investigation.

“There will be a police presence in the area for some time to allow full investigation of the circumstances, and Sidney Street is currently still closed off.”

One man said he saw about seven police cars at the scene and that the Sidney Street has been cordoned off at both ends.

He added: “I was just passing, heading down the road. there’s about six or seven vehicles and unmarked cars. There certainly seems to be an awful lot of police.

“The road is blocked at both ends and people are saying it is going to be closed for a couple of hours.”

He said there appeared to be something “covered up” on the street.

Police are urging anyone with information to call 101, or to speak to any police officer. Information can be given anonymously through Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111. The reference number for the incident is 1259 – January 23.
