An Arbroath woman was arrested just minutes after being dropped-off at her house by police.

Kathleen Carnegie, 43, had been taken back to Arbroath from Dundee by police after appearing from custody on another matter – no longer before the courts – on January 5.

She was subject to a restriction of liberty order to keep her in her Newbigging Drive home after 7pm.

She found her door locked and with no keys to get in, made her way to a friend’s house, via the town’s Morrisons supermarket.

There, she found herself picked up again by police, minutes after they had set her down at home

Carnegie was arrested and kicked-off in the back of the police car as they made their way back to the Dundee custody unit.

At Dundee Sheriff Court, she admitted shouting, swearing and acting in an abusive manner towards police in a “reaction” to the situation in which she found herself.

Police abuse

Depute fiscal Kate Scarborough said: “On the journey towards police headquarters in Dundee, the accused shouted and swore at officers.

“She said ‘f**k you’ and ‘you are going to need more officers to deal with me’ and ‘I am going to stick my nut on you’.

Defence solicitor Billie Rennie, in mitigation, explained why she was so angry.

He said: “She was arrested after she could not get back into her house.

“Her reaction was at being arrested so soon after being released.

“She was not back at her house until after 8pm.”

Mr Rennie explained her restriction of liberty order meant she was required to be at home between 7pm and 7am but this was not possible because of an earlier court hearing.

Her not guilty plea to the breach was accepted by the Crown.

Poster girl for offending scheme

Sheriff Alistair Carmichael deferred sentence for reports, and said: “There was no reason for you to behave like this with police.

“They were just doing their job.”

Carnegie, who has a history of offending in Angus, hit the headlines in 2019 after being used as an example of someone who had turned their life around with the help of the Glen Isla programme.

It is a scheme which has seen a drastic reduction in the number of reoffending incidents by female attendees

She met with then-Justice Secretary Humza Yousaf at the Glen Isla base in Arbroath as he toured the project.
