The direct Dundee to Amsterdam flights were said to be popular.

Dundee Airport is to offer start offering flights to Amsterdam seven days a week due to overwhelming public demand for the service.

The flights were introduced in May but the route only operated between Mondays and Fridays.

Three weeks ago, operators FlyBe introduced Sunday flights.

They have been so popular, without harming passenger numbers on weekdays, that a Saturday service is now being introduced in November.

A spokesman for Highlands and Islands Airports said: “The plan is to move to seven days a week to and from Amsterdam from November, with the introduction of a Saturday flight.

“They are flying six days a week at the moment, after the Sunday service was introduced three weeks ago, and the team are delighted with the response from the public to the service..

“Dundee Airport manager Derrick Lang and his team are always open to adding new services and are in regular contact with partners and airlines to explore opportunities to bring more flights to Dundee.”

The flights between Dundee and Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport have been popular since they were introduced.

Thousands of tickets were snapped up within the first weeks of sale.

The link, is one of only two routes operating out of Dundee, received funding from the UK Regional Air Connectivity Fund.

It is understood the service is even proving popular North Sea oil gas workers who want to travel to Aberdeen from England.

Rather than travelling directly to Aberdeen by plane, it can be cheaper to fly to Amsterdam and get a connecting flight to Dundee and then completing the rest of the journey by car or public transport.

The route into Dundee is also popular with European students coming to study in Scotland.

Dundee City Council development management convener Will Dawson said: “It is pleasing to see the that this flight has become incredibly popular since its introduction.

“Air links to Dundee continue to play an important role in the long term regeneration of the city and it is great to see that even more people will get to use the service.

“Hopefully this will encourage more operators to look at other introductions at the airport and build on the success of Amsterdam.”
