New electric vehicle chargers worth £400,000 planned for Dundee

Electric vehicle charging points worth £400,000 could be coming to Dundee under new proposals.

Twenty-one new chargers could be installed at seven locations across the city, if contracts for SWARCO and Urban Electric are approved.

New charging point locations

The charging points will be installed in the following locations:

  • Granton Place
  • Graham Street
  • Haywood Place
  • Woodside Avenue
  • Dryburgh Gardens
  • Dock Street
  • Roseangle Car Park
  • Balgarthno Campus
  • Caird Park

A price of £312,000 has been placed on the SWARCO chargers, with the Urban Electric contract being valued at £98,000.

New chargers would ‘break down barrier’ to EV ownership

Eighteen of the suggested chargers will be close to properties without access to off-street parking, making it easier for those without a garage or driveway to choose green transport.

Mark Flynn, convener of the city development committee, said: “More than half of the city’s homes don’t have access to off-street parking and in the past this has been a barrier to owning and running an electric vehicle.

“By putting on street residential charging at seven locations spread across three council wards we are making a start on breaking down that barrier.”

Work on charger scheme could begin next month

Councillors will be asked to vote on the new proposals at a meeting of the city development committee on Monday.

If approved, work on the project could begin as early as next month – with completion expected in spring.

The proposal comes just a week after the council announced plans to increase tariffs for charging electric vehicles in Dundee.

The new rates – which will be introduced in December – mean fast chargers will now cost 25p per kWh, with rapid chargers costing 30p per kWh.
