40 new homes for Stobswell welcomed

A new £4 million housing development is to begin in Dundee this July.

40 homes will be built on vacant land within the city’s Eliza Street, in the Stobswell area.

The development will entail 36 new flats and four semi-detached homes.

The site was cleared some years ago and has lain vacant ever since, attracting fly-tipping and vandalism

Planning permission was, in fact, granted in August 2005 for the
redevelopment of the site, together with the refurbishment of tenements, shops and a children’s nursery.

Part of that refurbishment took place, but the new build element was shelved because of the economic downturn and lack of funding.

Now, news that the site is to be finally built upon has received a warm welcome.

Donald MacDonald, managing director of Ogilvie Construction, the firm tasked with the development, said: “We are delighted to have been chosen to build the new homes and will be working closely with Hillcrest Housing Association to deliver high quality homes for their future tenants.

“Throughout the project our team will engage with the local community to consider their needs and ensure the minimum disruption in the immediate area.”

David Zwirlein, director of development and new business with the Hillcrest Group, said: “Working with Ogilvie Construction to deliver 40 new homes in Dundee continues our commitment to providing much needed affordable housing in the city.

“Providing energy efficient homes is always a priority for us to help reduce the cost for tenants once they have moved in. We’re looking forward to getting started on the site and watching the project come together.”

Maryfield councillor Lynne Short also welcomed the development.

She said: “Regeneration is happening all over the city, not just at the Waterfront.

“I’m delighted that these homes are coming into the area.

“This will bring in additional jobs and additional spend in shops.

“It’s fantastic. It has to be encouraged.”

Developers say the new homes will be built to the Greener Homes Innovation Scheme standard, using modern sustainable construction methods and creating fuel efficient homes that reduce energy bills.
