Bogus workmen chased off from pensioner’s garden

Residents are being urged to be aware of bogus callers.
Residents are being urged to be aware of bogus callers.

A good Samaritan chased three bogus workmen from the garden of an elderly woman they were attempting to steal from.

Police are appealing for information after a group of men attempted to steal items from an 81-year-old woman on Old Glamis Road on Thursday evening.

One man approached the woman in her garden, offering to carry out some work. After talking his way inside her house, two other men appeared and entered her home, with the apparent intention of stealing from her property.

The lady’s neighbour noticed this and intervened, managing to chase them from the house before they could commit any crime.

The first suspect who approached the victim at her door is described as being in his early 50s, around 5ft 8in tall, of stocky build and was wearing a navy jacket, light brown trousers and a checked cap.

The second suspect is described as being about 6ft tall, and wore a brown tweed jacket and cap. Both of these men spoke with English – Irish accents.

The third suspect was wearing a dark jacket with a hood.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland reminded people to remain vigilant toward people approaching their door and offering to carry out work uninvited, particularly if they are anxious to enter the house.

He said: “We would ask everyone to always be aware of persons coming around their doors looking to do work, but particularly if they seem anxious to try and get into your house for any reasons.

“If you are at all unsure of their intentions, ask them to leave and if they are genuine, they should do so and leave a business card of some kind.

“Anyone with any information that may be useful should contact Tayside Division on 101 quoting CR/16879/17 or speak to any Police officer. Alternatively information can be passed anonymously via the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
