Ferry Merry Christmas with wannabe Perrie and co.

Last year's event saw thousands of people attend.
Last year's event saw thousands of people attend.

The Broughty Ferry Christmas lights are to be switched on this Thursday with the help of a Little Mix tribute band.

An evening of family fun activities will see the town’s Brook Street transformed into a “winter wonderland” filled with attractions from local shops and restaurants, before Little Mix Magic storm the stage.

Little Mix Magic, who look uncannily like the real deal.

The Ferry will also kick off the city’s Christmas celebrations by hosting the first light switch-on of the year.

Dundee’s main lights will be turned on next weekend, with a special celebration on November 24.

Broughty Ferry Traders Association (BFTA) is once again responsible for bringing the night together and the town is expecting to welcome thousands of visitors.

More than 3,000 people converged on Castle Green in October for the “Castle Scream” Halloween celebrations and Ferry Lib Dem councillor Craig Duncan hopes to smash that total at Thursday night’s event.

BFTA chairman Steve James said: “The Christmas lights switch-on is a great way to bring all of our community together to enjoy a good, old fashioned street party.

“There’s always such a great atmosphere and the lights give Broughty Ferry a lovely festive twinkle, literally lighting up the town with the spirit of a Merry Ferry Christmas.”

The annual switch-on has been so hotly anticipated that work on replacing the platform at Broughty Ferry train station, which was due to start in September, was postponed until the new year.

Traders and councillors had worried that the scheme, which would have required the large car park to be closed off, would put people off from attending the event.

Mr Duncan said: “To have the space for parking for the expected number of visitors coming on Thursday will be a big help.

“This event seems to get more popular every year and is of great significance, not just to Broughty Ferry but the whole of Dundee.

“Events like this and the Castle Scream event in October are really driven by our terrific traders association.

“Thousands of people are expected and I for one am very keen to see as many people come down as possible.

“It will be a good family event and with Little Mix Magic performing, along with the Scottish Police and Community Choir and the Thomas Leng Musical Society, there really is something for everyone.”
