Wrestling stars all set for Dundee grapple-fest

This year's Hell for Lycra takes place at the Caird Hall.
This year's Hell for Lycra takes place at the Caird Hall.

A host of international and home-grown wrestling talent will tear up Dundee’s Caird Hall on Saturday.

The Genius, Grado and Colt Cabana are among the big names performing at Scottish Wrestling Entertainment’s annual Hell for Lycra.

David Low.

Dundee-based SWE has previously brought big names to the city including Million Dollar Man Ted DiBiase, Virgil, Rowdy Roddy Piper, Chyna, Tatanka and Hacksaw Jim Duggan.

This year’s event will feature a packed bill including a Battle Royal in memory of former wrestler Tommy Stevenson who was due to be a guest before he passed away suddenly last month.

SWE ambassador David Low said: “The Genius is our main guest of honour this year and hopes to bring poetic justice to Dundee.

“He is also the real-life brother of Macho Man Randy Savage and will be bringing Macho Man’s Hall of Fame ring for all the Macho fans to wear and get photos with.

“This year’s line-up is one of our best to date and it’s going to be a fantastic evening of entertainment at the home of wrestling.”

The Genius.

The Genius, whose real name is Lanny Poffo, started life in World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) in 1985 as Leaping Lanny Poffo and attained some infamy in late 1986 and early 1987 by competing in full knight’s armour.

He is famous for his poems and limericks which ridicule his opponents before matches.

He wears an academic cap and gown to the ring and would often write a mathematical equation on a clipboard to tilt the balance of a match in his favour.

He said: “I have been to many places in the UK but never anywhere in Scotland. I’m very excited to be going and the promotion promised they would help me do some sightseeing while I’m here.

“I’m the biggest fan of the singer Amy Macdonald.

“She sings Flower of Scotland at the big football games.

“It is on my bucket list to sing it in Dundee at the event.”

Wrestler turned actor Grado, from Ayrshire, is combining his wrestling with a new acting career and has been filming BBC Scotland hit Scot Squad and the sitcom Two Doors Down.

Fans at last year’s event.

Grado will compete for the SWE World Heavyweight title in a three-way triple threat fight involving defending champion The Jackal and Felix Fortune who has cashed in on his rematch clause.

Former WWE star Colt Cabana has competed in every corner of the globe, from Japan to India, and worked, in some capacity, for every promotion of note over the last decade.

Cabana will fight in a triple threat match at the Caird Hall against The Riot and KJ Nitro when he returns to Dundee to fight in the SWE for the fifth time.

Other matches on Saturday’s bill include GM Grue versus Bravehart for the right to run the company with the loser being forced to leave the SWE.

JD Wilde will face up to Ken Kaiden; Scotty Riccio will fight Spike Tierney; and the Tommy Stevenson Memorial Invitational Battle Royal is expected to draw a crowd.
