Hilltown Market fire: Police launch investigation after another major blaze in Dundee

Police in Dundee are appealing for information after an indoor market in the Hilltown was destroyed by fire on Wednesday night.

Firefighters battled for hours to bring the blaze at the Hilltown Indoor Market under control.

Witnesses said the fire spread to the building after a sofa left outside the property was set ablaze.

Four youths were seen leaving the area around 6.25pm, just before the fire broke out.

Inspector Cath Lannen from Police Scotland’s Tayside Division said: “Enquiries are at an early stage and we will work jointly with Scottish Fire and Rescue Service to establish the cause of the fire.

“The building has been extensively damaged.

The aftermath of the fire that tore through the Hilltown Indoor Market and Fit4Less gym on Main Road, Hilltown.

“There are road closures still in place at Caldrum Street and Thistle Street and I would like to thank motorists for their patience whilst this is ongoing.

“I would appeal to anyone who was in the area around the time of the fire to come forward to Police Scotland and contact us on 101 or or Crimestoppers Scotland anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

The incident was the third major blaze in Dundee in as many days followings fires at Braeview Academy on Tuesday and at a farm near Strathmartine Hospital on Monday.

The incidents are not thought to be connected.
